Primative Cloth Dolls The dolls shown below are hand made and all embroidering is hand sewn. A doll was a precious possesion to an early American girl. Her mother would use what materials she had to make a special friend for her daughter. Some dolls were made from wood , corn husks, clay or plaster. Many times the materials were scraps left over from making the families clothes and decorated with colored threads the mother would have. Some dolls had faces some were left plain for the girl to use her imagination. The doll was a very special friend and went everywhere with the girl especially at night when she went to bed. Many times the doll was the only friend she had , other than her family, until she went to school.
